Growing Your List Doesn’t Have To Be Difficult

Kathryn Tague • Nov 10, 2020

Growing your list , capturing data from your audience, and building out your network of warm leads doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. While it’s something that takes some strategy and time, growing a robust list is part of the long game in marketing and business building, overthinking it and trying to create some elaborate process is really just you getting in your own way.

Stop it.

No. Seriously. Stop overthinking and overcomplicating the process of growing your audience. So long as you’re creating enticing, educational, relatable content and regularly adding value to the lives of your followers, your list will grow.

Here are 3 pointers to help you grow your list:

Give something simple away for free if they sign up –  This can be just about anything. A downloadable PDF, small pamphlet or e-book, a discovery call with you, a free estimate, etc.

Offering a quick and easy “freebie” to anyone who signs up is a great way to take readers from a cold or semi-warm audience to subscribers, followers, fans, and eventually customers.

Your free offer doesn’t have to be long, or fancy. It can literally be a google doc that you’ve created for some system or process in your business that could apply to another small business owner’s journey. The link to download goes out with their welcome email, and you collect their contact information for your CRM.

If you’re in a service-based business, a free estimate or 15-30 minute discovery call is another great way to get people to opt-in to your email list. Obviously, you need to determine if your time is worth it, and possibly delegate pieces of this particular offer to other members of your team, but being able to collect the data from your audience, and offer something of value in return, is a win-win for everyone.

Create a survey or quiz – People love answering questions, especially if they’re about them. You can create a short 3-5 question survey or quiz with fun and engaging questions about your audience that gets them “talking” and gives you the opportunity to grow your list. SurveyMonkey and Google Forms are both free, and can be used to create quick and easy surveys for your audience. SurveyMonkey also has a quiz feature.

Ask them to sign up – This is the simplest, and often most effective way to grow your list in the early stages. Post to your social media platforms, engage your already existing audience and then let them know you have an email list you’d like them to be a part of. You might be surprised how many people want to take their support off social media and become more closely involved in your business.

Growing your list is easier than you think.

Growing your email list can feel like a daunting task if you’ve never done something like it before, but it doesn’t have to be. Have fun with it, get creative, and get your already existing platforms involved. You’ll discover quickly that while it plays a vital role in owning your traffic, it doesn’t have to be complicated!
